Undoing Militarized Narconarratives: Outlines of the Popular in Illegalized Markets
In this first workshop and conference of the Long-Term Group „Dimensions of Regulation: Conceptualizing the Popular in the Drugs/Violence Nexus„, the participants explore the „gray zone“ between legality and illegality in drug economies, examining how prohibitionist policies, militarization, and securitarian narratives shape systems of violence, inequality, and governance. Moving beyond the conventional framing of the „war on drugs“, it looks at how state-driven narratives and surveillance practices reinforce stigmas around class, gender, and race, while often overlooking the everyday realities of people involved in these economies. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives and critical debates, the opening conference proposes the Popular as both an economic and an analytical lens. It aims to rethink dominant narratives around „drug trafficking“ and „cartels“, and to explore more grounded and just alternatives.
In addition to the members of the Long-Term Group, the sessions are enriched by contributions of renowned scholars and practitioners such as Rita Laura Segato (Brazil), Seth Harp (USA), Luci Cavallero (Argentina), and Luca Trenta (UK), among others—bringing a vibrant range of perspectives and expertise to the dialogue.
